MEX Notes: Tang Yau Hoong and the art of negative space

  • MEX note: This post of Tang Yau Hoong's work on the Subtraction.com blog caught my eye. The use of negative space in art can add emphasis to a composition and interface designers would do well to consider its role in the user experience. It can be particularly effective when combined with the black bezels bordering the active area of most mobile displays. By using negative space, designers can add focus to the content elements which swim within it. The technique is particularly effective on devices with larger black areas around the display and screens which show deep blacks, such as Nokia's clear black display (CBD) technology.
