MEX Notes: Microsoft makes every surface a touch screen

MEX note: Hrvoje Benko and Scott Saponas at Microsoft Research have created a prototype display which uses a pico projector and motion sensing technology to project a touch screen onto almost any surface. MEX alumni will recall the December 2010 session from Greg Taylor of TigerSpike, in which he explored the user experience possibilities of free space projection and pico projectors.
One of the main conclusions from previous MEX sessions on this topic is that we must no longer think of the terms ‘screen’ and ‘display’ as interchangeable. Displays will take many forms and have a wide range of characteristics. User experience practitioners will gain from understanding their individual attributes and thinking about how they can be woven together into an experience greater than the sum of their parts.
