MEX Inspirations for 27th November 2009

Smithsonian Fill The Gap Project

I recently learned of an interesting technique employed by the Luce Foundation Center for American Art, which is the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s visible storage facility, showing over 3,300 works of art in 64 secure glass cases. When works of art are loaned to other institutions, they post a photo of the blank space on Flickr and encourage people to recommend which other works from the collection should fill the space while it is vacant. It is a great example of how digital media can be used to link with the physical experience of events, galleries and places.
