The user

We have 2 big categories of users.

Our target user among the end-users is just each and every Windows Mobile device owner. If the person looks for a device with easy to navigate convenient and customizable interface then he is our target user.

Other category consists of OEMs/device manufacturers usually market leaders who are looking for the ways to reduce the time-to-market and commercial risk of launching a new device or interface.

The experience

SPB Mobile Shell is a unique user interface for Windows Mobile devices. It was updated to SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 in 2009 to make it more interactive and offer eye-catching 3D visual effects (including browsing emails and text messages).

SPB Mobile Shell brings a more interactive and enjoyable experience to mobile users. Now it’s easy to switch off from the office. The application offers professional and lifestyle home pages, giving users the option to customise their home page for their needs and choose from a wide range of widgets (including Facebook and Twitter).

Another benefit is the contacts management section. The favourite contacts screen is integrated with Facebook and is widget-based along with the photo call-log and smart contact search, making it easier to manage the phone.

The main objectives of the application

1. To create a user interface that offers great personalisation and customisation features for the user.
2. To partner well with mobile phone manufacturers and operators.
3. To create a new portable SPB UI Engine (SPB Mobile Shell) which will be easily transferred and used on more mobile platforms (including Android, Windows Mobile and Symbian)

Evidence of success

• With more than one million customers SPB Mobile Shell is the number one best-selling Windows Mobile programme world-wide (according to Handango in 2009)
• More than five million OEM devices were customised with Mobile Shell
• The application has been shipped to over 15 device manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and O2.
• In 2009 SPB established several new partnerships, including China’s ZTE, Huawei and the biggest China-based OEM – K-Touch
• In 2009 SPB Mobile Shell won the Marketplace Race to Market Challenge in the category ‘Most revenue made by paid application’
• SPB Mobile Shell won Windows Mobile application of the year in Handango’s Champion Awards 2009
