Is the browser the only truly mass market platform?

In response to yesterday’s article on the use of Java by application developers targeting mass market opportunities, Kevin Perkins – CEO of Greenlight Wireless – contacted me with information on his company’s Skweezer service.

Kevin believes the browser provides the only truly mass market mobile data platform, with near-universal penetration on new handsets (Openwave recently announced it has shipped its 1 billionth browser license). Greenlight’s Skweezer service provides a personalised portal for mobile browsers, which can be configured for mail, news and other services from a desktop PC. It also optimises any web page for display on a mobile device.

Although they lack the rich interface of many Java applications, browser-based services re-format more easily for a wide range of screen sizes and device types.

The service is free and available at http://www.greenlightwireless.net.
