Stat Spot: Reasons for lower mobile phone ownership among females
42% | 300m fewer women own mobile phones than men in low- to middle-income countries, but the reasons are rather different than one may imagine. Just 3% cite a lack of spousal permission as the reason, while a further 3% say it is because they are afraid of the technology. However, the largest single reason is still the cost of handsets, cited by 42% of those who don’t yet own a phone. Other reasons include a lack of demand because everyone they want to talk to can be reach locally (20%) or they are happy with their fixed telephone (10%). |
