Sony Ericsson’s floating elegance

Sony Ericsson Z610Sony Ericsson’s latest clamshell handset, the Z610, is a further example of the manufacturer’s commitment to elegant design. The 3G device uses OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology to power a ‘floating’ sub-display on the outside of the casing. Using a technique similar to that found in Sony’s network Walkmans, the external display appears to hover within the translucent cover of the handset.

It also includes a 2 megapixel camera, support for RSS feeds, push email and picture blogging. Sony Ericsson will make it available in three colours: pink, light blue and black. See the previous MEX articles entitled ‘What comes after thin?‘ and ‘Individuality through handset colours‘ for further thoughts on the importance of offering a range of colour options.

In other news, Motorola said it would start offering its RAZR handsets with a variety of ‘tattoos’ laser-etched into the exterior casing. The handset manufacturer is working with artist Ami James from the popular TV show ‘Miami Ink’ to develop the designs. Motorola has also started selling RAZRs in gold, pink, blue, black, silver and red.
