Andrew Muir Wood, MEX alumnus and also a speaker (read his blog here) at the next MEX on 30 Nov – 01 Dec, introduced me to the topic of light painting recently. For those who haven’t heard of this technique, it involves taking long photographic exposures in a darkened room, using bright lights to ‘paint’ shapes into the photograph.
Making Future Magic: iPad light painting from Dentsu London on Vimeo.
I have since come across this example by design agency BERG, where they use stop-motion animation, displayed on the screen of an iPad, to create a beautiful short film (click on the image for the video) on the theme of ‘Making future magic’. The project was commissioned by BERG client Dentsu and involved Timo Arnall, Campbell Orme, Matt Brown and Jack Schultze.
It links with MEX Pathway #4, entitled ‘Identify ways 3D can enrich the user experience with visual depth‘, hinting at ways in which 3D and augmented reality may combine in the future, creating new experiences where the virtual world merges with the physical.
BERG also published a book on the making of their film.
