Vodafone acquires control of Vizzavi
British mobile phone giant Vodafone Plc said on Friday it had bought troubled media group Vivendi’s 50 percent stake in their web portal joint venture Vizzavi for EUR 142.7 ($140.6 million). The much-touted move comes as Vivendi, the world’s second-largest media company struggles to stave off a cash crisis. Analysts believe the deal could breathe fresh life into an internet portal designed for mobile phones and personal and handheld computers, which some had dismissed as worthless.

Vodafone will now work quickly to integrate Vizzavi into its international operations, abandoning the Vizzavi brand name in favour of ‘Vodafone Live’. Hopefully Vodafone’s control will result in a portal service focused entirely on the mobile environment and encourage the company to open the service up to a broad range third party developers providers as a platform for delivering mobile content and applications.
